Shawn Ooi - 1985 Toyota 4Runner mudding at San Gabriel Canyon on Sept. 29, 2001

Opie!!!

So why "Opie", you ask? We nicknamed it Opie after "OPEC". When I bought it, Opie was leaking so much oil that it literally had the whole underside of the truck coated with oil (not much chance of rust here), not to mention dripping all over the driveway, blowing oil (and smoke) out the back on the freeway...you get the idea.

I bought my 1985 Toyota 4Runner SR5 completely stock in November 1999 from a private owner for $3,400. I have since heavily modified it to try to make it as off-road worthy as possible.

My plan is to build a trail-rig/ daily-driver. Basically, what I want is a very capable off-road machine that I can still proudly take and valet park at all the nice parties, restaurants, clubs and hotels (hey, I live in Los Angeles!!!) but at the same time, is able to tackle tough trails, rocks, hills and mud. It's not built-up for any one specific terrain (like a rock-buggy or a mud-bogger) but to be able to handle most things that mother nature can dish out.

It currently has approx. 358,000 miles on it. This is the second Toyota 4Runner that I have owned.

I also have a 2004 Aprilia RSV1000R and a 2000 Ducati 996 (currently in pieces).
